New King of the Hill

Sport 'not about a jump' says new champion
By Alan Abrahamson

VANCOUVER -- Is figure skating sport or show? The men's free skate Thursday made for a dilemma that goes to the heart of what, precisely, skating is about now, and what it should be about going forward.

Sitting there in front of your high-definition television, a quart of chocolate fudge ice cream at the ready, did you root for American Evan Lysacek? Even though he didn't throw even one quadruple jump in his program?

A handful of the others, including Russia's Yevgeny Plushenko, the 2006 Olympic champion, did throw a quad.

Lysacek won gold here at these 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Plushenko silver. The medal marks the first gold for American men since Brian Boitano won in 1988. "Crazy! Crazy! I can't believe it!" Lysacek said. Courtesy: NBC Sports
